Very nicely done checkering. I'll second that on the fore end tip. I'd have a hard time shooting birds due to gawking at the gun all day. :)

The first thing I would do is get it back to the gunsmith and have it made right. Most likely the safety rod is a shade long or the angle of the hole was changed due to refitting the stock. In either case, it should not be a major problem for the gunsmith, though it is surely a major pain to the sho...

For your 2000 you get a new gun made for you. If I could afford a new one, that's the route I'd go.Would also make something nice to pass on to the family. The best reason I can see for upgrading a Sterlingworth is if you have specific wood or engraving in mind.

The Utica gun that I have is much narrower at the bottom of the pistol grip than the capped stocks. I think you'll end up with a funky shaped cap if you cut it to fit the contour of your stock. If the stock has no other problems, I'm not so sure that you'd really want to do that. The one I have has ...

For that kind of money, I'd just as soon have Galazan build me a new one.

When they ran out of tapered ones from Phila. Small gauge guns seemed to get the Utica style before the 12 bores from what I've seen.

Harry,
The swans passed thru here last week. They were going North. Would assume the woodcock are heading the same direction. Gun Show at Greensburg, PA next weekend. Hope to see some Foxes there. Fred :)

Check the home page- assembly and disassembly- by Mike Campbell, if you want to see if it was done correctly. Cleaning is most likely not the problem. Check to see that there isn't a problem where the fore end dog pushes into the cocking slide on assembly.

The short chamber, long shell article is in Winter 2001 issue. I'm glad Sherman Bell does that type of testing and gives a good description of the results. It opens your eyes about some common beliefs that we've all heard and took for gospel over the years. Frank is right, it pertains to 12 ga. shel...

ironman, if that checkering is on the cheek(directly behind the action) I'd be suspect of a crack and/or a repair. A grades are not usually checkered there from the factory. However, it is often done later on to cover up a repair. In any case, if it is sound, I wouldn't let it worry me.

If I'm reading it right, the gold diamond may well be brass covering a repair behind the head of the stock. Or it could be solid brass through and through, as a repair. If the looks don't bother you or affect function of the gun, I'd bang away with it for a while and see how it holds up. $400 is a p...
