Remington "Sportsman" 12 ga.

I just picked up a Remington Sportsman 12ga and it's nothing fancy just a neat old gun. The reason I wanted it , it has a Cutts compensator on a skeet barrel and with it came the 5 tube set still in the wooden case with wrench. This is my question and it's probably aimed at Dave N. I tried to decipher the date code which is on the side of the barrel, CK 3 KG, and the S/N on the side of the receiver, 397927. Ventilated rib, cross bolt safety and Remington hard buttplate.

The Receiver with that serial number was put in work during July 1937. That is right in the time frame Remington quit the separate serial number sequence for 12-gauge The Sportsman in the 5xxxxx range and started using the Model 11 sequence for both. The only difference is the magazine tube and the forearm wood. My 12-gauge The Sportsman 507664 has a 30-inch solid rib IMP MOD barrel with a date code PE (P = June E = 1936) and the receiver was put in work sometime in 1936. The 12-gauge The Sportsman ledger page shows that by Jan 24, 1936, they had reached 505939 and then the next entry is Feb 12, 1937, when they had reached 510525. The last The Sportsman serial number receiver was 515506 by Aug 24, 1937.

KG (K = May G = 1938) is likely the date code for the barrel and CK3 (C = April K = 1941) is a repair code for when it went back to Ilion for some unknown service.

Thanks Dave. This is better than a Parker factory letter. My barrel is marked skeet and it looks like Bobby's gun could be mine complete with the Cutts.

3/4 oz will not cycle. I only use 1 1/8oz target loads.

Thanks Jeff. As I said before back when I first started shooting we only had skeet and trap and just about all the famous shooters at my club were using them. One of the founding members of my club was a shooter named Harry Wright. Google him and Loch Raven Skeet and Trap club. The history of Col. Cutts is an interesting read too.
