Factory Red Head Pad ? ? ?

Could this Red Head pad on a 1922 AE 16 be an original factory pad ?

If not, What pad would be appropriate for that time period ?

Nope. The design for the Red Head pad was filed April 19, 1937, and granted as Design No. 105,358 on July 20, 1937.

The most found pad on A.H. Fox Gun Co. guns of that era would be the Jostam Anti-Flinch or a Silvers type (Silvers, Goodrich or Jostam Air-Cushon) pad on higher grades. A customer could order a one-, two- or three-ply Jostam Sponge Rubber pad. By the later 1920s the Hawkins pad was on the market.

I ran across a gun the other day that had that same style pad with Jostam markings.

I assume Jostam made that pad for Red Head.

I've never see such a thing in a Jostam catalog or magazine ad. Would love to add a picture of it to my files. Red Head was in Chicago, and by the time of these pads Jostam was south of town in Peotone. We have seen quite a few different brands on the "Red Head" pad, like this marked Tru-Sport for E.K. Tryon --

I could not agree more with that comment Mike!! I have learned more from Mr. Researchers posts than any other single source of information. I would sign up to buy a book authored by him in a second!!!!

JMHO, but there are times when I would leave a period pad on a gun that was not the absolute correct pad that the gun was/might have been shipped with. I have one like that. If it is not a "deal breaker", why put a pad on it that anybody will know isn't original, just to have the "right" brand pad on it? I know some here will think I'm crazy, but I have one gun that has an old pad on it that I know isn't correct, but it looks a lot better on there than a "new" correct pad. I cannot imagine that a correct pad, that has been added, and obviously so, will add any more to the value than a period correct pad that isn't the right one.

Since Researcher told me the Red Head pad wasn't out until the 30's I've been asking myself that same question before actually changing the pad.

The factory card for this AE 16 shows the LOP at 14 1/8 when it was made. It measures exactly 14 1/8 now with the vintage Red Head pad . Since I don't know what kind of butt plate was installed at the factory I can't imagine someone removing the butt plate and cutting the wood and then adding a pad back to the same LOP.

I have a Galazan orange Silvers pad and a NOS Hawkins with hearts pad coming from Brett that I was thinking of using one of them. This gun is only the second Fox that I have owned and now I'm not sure what to do.

Since the gun is in such nice condition I was thinking that the proper thing to do would be to put a correct period pad on it.

I would appreciate others opinion...

I am not an authority, Karl. My previous post was just an opinion. One thing I believe tho', it is easy to spend a couple hundred putting a "correct" pad on it that won't increase the value of the gun as much as the cost. However, if it makes the gun what YOU want it to be, that's different. Each gun should be evaluated on it's own merits, or lack of, I think.

In the end, it's your gun. make it what YOU want it to be.

Meat-in-the-Pot was ordered with a 13 1/2 inch length-of-pull with no mention of a recoil pad in 1914. When I got her in 1966 she had a brown Pachmayr Whiteline pad for a 13 1/2 inch length-of-pull. I've been shooting her with a lace-on pad over that Pachmayr for 51 years now.

I am trying to keep the faith that one of these days Griffin & Howe is going to get the supply chain re-established for their small plug Silvers type pads. I've been calling them for almost two years and talking with the same guy each time. He always says that the problem lies with the quality of the rubber and that they're working with the supplier to get it straightened out. If they ever do, that's what will be going on my 16 AE, too.

Dave, was that a '68 or '69 El Camino?

It was a 1970, probably as plain Jane as they came, 307 V8 with three on the tree and dog dish hub caps. Bought it at the Pensacola Buggy Works after I finished Officer Candidate School and was a shiny new Ensign.
