Earlier this week a couple of friends of mine and I went to the Cabela's in Hammod, IN for some shooting supplies. We made our usual walk thru of the Gun Library and there, in one of the cases, was this gun marked AHF on the tag. I told one of my friends that it sure looked like a Fox so I took it out of the case and sure enough it was an early (#7647) C grade. It's not perfect, the action was hot blued for some reason or other however the engraving is excellent. The wood was given gloss finish including the checkering and it is missing a butt plate or recoil pad.
Now for the good part: This Fox has 2 sets of barrels. The set marked #1 is 30" and is choked .011R - .015L, the set marked #2 and serial numbered to the gun is 32" and choked .030R - .030L. The second set has its own forearm numbered to the gun. The barrels are nearly perfect with what I believe are original, nice, shiney .723 - .724 bores and 2 5/8" chambers. I was really pleased when I shouldered the gun and it fit me really well in spite of no butt plate or pad. I later measured the stock and found 1 3/8" DAC - 2 1/8" DAH - perfect for me. Apparently someone in 1908 - 09 liked high dimensions!
The best part was the price! Someone at Cabela's did not have a clue as to the value.
Great story, I bought my Fox Skeeter that way but not from Cabelas, with the Vent Rib they thought it was a Fox Model B, blued receiver all strange but true. The bluing will come off quite easy with remover. I alway wonder why people blue the receivers I wonder if they are trying to look like a Win model 21?
DGKaas wrote:Nice Doug , I have an early 32"/28" CE set. Also, I sent you an email to your hotmail account on a Lindner project.
Maybe if you tell Mr. Lander how much you paid Cabelas for the C grade, he'll tell us how much he paid for all the guns on his website...
Don, I almost spit up my coffee! I will say this: I will never get one at this price again. No one in their right mind would sell a Fox C for that price.
BTW, I did not receive you email about the Lindner so please try again @ customfox@hotmail.com
Doug- I just resent the email. (it has some attachments. Perhaps its being blocked?) I once bought an XE Phila Fox from The Big C for $2200 that was listed only as a "Fox Boxlock" (SST, 28" bbls, pistol grip and 2" D@H!)
Hello Don: If you really want to know just let me know which one & I'll be more than happy to tell you what I paid for it. My point was, everyone likes to get a bargain especially from an outfit like Cabelas. Sounds like you made a great deal on the XE as did Doug on the CE. As long as nobody's taking advantage of somebody's widow I say," more power to them".
Best Regards, George

I thought I would post a couple of pictures of my newly aquired Fox for everyone to see. However, my main reason for posting them is to get eveyone's take on the safety. It appears to be a later Fox safety button and there is no "SAFE" marking on the tang. I'm wondering if this gun was originally made as a live bird gun wth no safety and one was added later. I would ask for a letter on the gun but I'm not sure if information is available for a 1909 Fox.
