Engraved "The Sterlingworth Co"

Post by ASavageFox »

I know most of the collectors are into the graded guns and the small bores but I like things that are somewhat rare and have reasonable condition... hope this is not too boring for ya all ;)

Couple pictures of a sterlingworth that I picked up a few weeks ago.... not sure if the engraving stopped at the same time that the Wayne Junction stopped but would be interested in collecting data on any that you all may have... feel free to PM me if you don't mind sharing. I ran across a few in my search for a nice one but did not really keep the best of records... pretty much all of the other really early SWs that I found while looking for a nice one were terribly beat up so I only record serial numbers and if it was stamped Wayne junction or not. Likewise, turns out like most things Fox, there is no set serial number break between the Wayne Junction versus Phila stamping. I found one Wayne Junction gun in the 503xx range and a Phila stamped barrel in the 502xx range.
There are a few other unique things about the early guns that seem to decrease over time... such as the V shaped engraving just behind the fences, by 1000 gun later this is down to just one V, and by the time the guns are just stamped Sterlingworth, there is no V shaped engraving at all.

Very interesting, first engraved The Sterlingworth Co. I have ever seen. Does your gun have the checkering pattern on the grip with the added cut back area on the top of the grip panel? Also, is the checkering flat?
Is the grip cap checkered? Thanks for sharing. Would you allow us to add your pictures to the Sterlingworth section on our home page? Craig

Dave,

I don't mind if you post the pictures on the website but if you wait I'll get you better pics. As for your questions, I recall thinking the checkering looked like all of the other early pin guns with the "added cut back area" but now I really can not say for sure and I am not at home... I will take a look when I get home next weekend and let you know...same with the flat top checkering and pistol grip cap.

Cheers

Drew

Nice "Pin" Sterlingworth.
I have its cousin with the same...The Sterlingworth CO. #53220. Mine is missing the forend iron, which I believe is the "Baker flat spring snap on" style. Is that what yours is??? I think there were more than one forend iron design for the Pin,s but not sure. Perhaps someone could provide some information on that subject.
Anyway good find...
