1905 E.H. Godshalk & Co - Giant Marine Engines

Post by scaupman »

Old ads for Giant Marine Motors by EH Godshalk & Co are common on Ebay, but this is the first Catalog (1905 Giant Marine Engines) I have found describing their engines and boats in some detail.

Note the 28' x 6' 6" Hunting cabin boat at the bottom.

I saw a photo of a boat in this style used on Long Point Bay, ON, when collecting and researching Toronto School decoys (JRW, Warin, Chambers, Reeves) many years ago.

Very interesting. I did not know the Godshalks were in the marine business. That “hunting” boat is unique!

The Godshalks were quite the Entrepreneurs, selling a large variety of products over the years.

In 1867, Edward was selling carpets, druggets and oil cloths - see receipt below.

Mr. Google is your friend.

Druggets were used in large houses during the 18th century and continued until the early 20th. By the second quarter of the 19th century druggets were very wide, being sometimes two yards and sometimes four yards. They were laid over a carpet, to protect and preserve it when the room was in daily use, and only removed for company. Or they could be laid over an expensive carpet when the house was shut up for the winter. They were very tightly stretched over the carpet to avoid accidents.

We call them "throw rugs" today, at least down South.
