A nice light Ithaca , off my bucket list

I finally got to pick up this little Ithaca over the weekend. The short barrels, short length of pull and weighing in at 4 1/2 lbs. might make it a little whippy. The cyl/cyl chokes should make it good for close work though.

I have heard a rumor that ATF has relaxed rules on such guns. Of course, the owners and sellers would be the last to know. Contact ATF for the latest changes.

The nervous bank employee better make the first shot count. I shot a "cutdown" double 12, very similar in size, when I was in college. I was holding it tightly with both hands and I still lost control of it at the first shot. The resulting jamming of the rear of the t'guard into my second finger didn't help, either. Recoil was horrendous. A 20 would be a little better, I guess, but it still might be a good idea to make that first shot count. Definitely an example of a gun that is dangerous on both ends.

A two hand hold would definitely be necessary for most people. The gun is very awkward and hard to bring into position with hand. Most people couldn't hold it up for more than a few seconds.

Nice catch, Dave. Methinks your Ithaca and similar guns were made to be shot with two-handed hold and while at waist height. Your post reminded me of the time years ago, we were at the cabin for a getaway weekend and one of the guys brought a pump-action Remington 870 with (legal) short barrel and a plastic pistol type handle. We were doing some casual shooting in the front lawn area and one of my friends decided on a whim to shoot at a thrown empty beverage can. He picked up the gun and kind of aimed at the high spinning can, and when the 870 recoiled he saw stars and the back end of the pistol handle knocked out one of his front teeth, blood all over his mouth and neck. That necessitated a trip to town 15 miles away where with a local friend's help he found a dentist who did a patch up job that took about 2 hours in the chair. That 870 still shows up at cabin weekends now and then and it always prompts laughter when its owner shows the tooth mark in the grip handle.
