Grade B No. 5 12 gauge with original tag

Post by iwill »

Hi folks. I am new to the forum but have been reading over previous postings and everyone seems friendly and helpful. I thought I would share some photos of my Fox shotgun that I inherited from my grandfather. It is a Grade B and it is No.5. It still has the original tag with Ansley Fox's signature. Curious what everyone thinks. Thanks!

Welcome. That is a real collector's dream. A gun with the original hang tag is a real plus for a collector, but one from the 1905-06 Wayne & Bristol Streets days is really sweet. In over fifty years of playing in the Fox game, I've seen one other Wayne & Bristol Street gun with the hang-tag.

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't think my grandfather or father really appreciated it or realized how special it is. The were both focused on collecting rifles and I think just dismissed it because it was a shotgun. My grandfather bought it originally for my aunt, his youngest daughter. I am really just learning about the history and this site has been incredibly helpful. Here are a couple more photos.

I want to do my best to preserve it as best as I can. I have read that Renaissance Wax is a preferred method for keeping it from deteriorating. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated as everyone here is far more knowledgeable than I am at this point. Thanks.

Outstanding!

When I seen the title of your thread: "Grade B No.5 . . .", I never envisioned that "5" would be the serial number. And with the original factory tag.

And it looks to be in fantastic condition and has had wonderful care by your family for about 115 years.

An absolute treasure.

Thank you for showing us. And if you could post some pictures of the barrel flats, fore end iron and water table, you would make a lot of people happy.

Thanks for sharing that with us. Looks like one heck of a nice piece of walnut for the buttstock. Wow, #5.

Great gun iwill!

I'm curious as to where your Grandfather lived or how he came to be "Almost first in line" to be able to buy such an early gun. Was he originally from the Philadelphia area?

Having the hang tag is almost unbelievable! No box? LOL!!

Thanks for sharing.

Wow! What a beauty. Great wood and I’m a huge fan of the round pistol grip. :)
