fox A grade 12 gauge hunt in northern lower michigan

Post by glassman48 »

I took my (new to me) fox A grade 12 gauge out today with my brittany cash and a buddy of mine, cash pointed 6 woodcock, and we flushed/pointed 6 grouse today. I got one woodcock and one grouse today with my fox. I took 6 shots, it was really tough shooting with all the leaves, and my easiest shot I had no doubt on a woodcock, but missed that one :D I will try to post some pictures, if they don't post, I will ask Jeff S. to post for me. What a really good day we had hunting today. This is the first woodcock and partridge I have taken with this shotgun, I am really happy with this gun.

It looks like Glassman (Ed) is enjoying retirement. This morning he went hunting with his "2nd gen" A grade and his dog, Cash. They had several flushes and they got a grouse and a woodcock. Pretty good, and I am officially jealous. Jeff

Jeff,
Thanks for posting these for me, not entirely retired yet, down to about 50 hours a week though so life is easier for me. What a beautiful day we had today, I took 2 different guys today one in the morning, and one this afternoon. Cash was the topic of the day words like "machine" and he is a serious hunting bird dog. Man my wife and I are so proud of him, my wife literally runs that dog every day except weekends or when I take him hunting, she does this year round.

Looks like the weather might be a little questionable this weekend, but hopefully you'll get out soon for more success. I'm heading to the U.P. Sunday morning with the hopes of shooting a couple ducks. :)

Jeff,
I took cash out today walked a 2 track, I think he pointed a couple of woodcock, it was so thick in there I could not get to him in time. I went to another open area, and he found 4 more woodcock in 15 min. I think at least one was a double point. If your going to be in the area some weekend or even possibly during the week, just let me know I will see if I can arrange a couple hour hunt. Thanks for posting for me.

Ed, I’d say you and Cash are enjoying some good early hunts. Great to see the A Grd doing what is is supposed to do!! I agree the leaves are still way to thick. I hunted several coverts between Baldwin and Luther today. Rosey pointed two grouse and two woodcock and I never got a shot off. While it was wt today from the rain last night it sure beat the 80 degree temps from last weekend!!

foxnut,
most of the time there is no shot, I am concentrating on more open type areas with some larger trees and less undergrowth, skirting along the more mature stuff, and the thick stuff. It seems to be working, cash has dropped a couple more pounds, he is fit now almost to the point of looking "starved" as my wife would say. I am taking a guy from fieldsport out tomorrow for a couple of hours. This is really been exciting for my wife and I we are pretty proud of how cash is coming along. Stop up if your ever in my neighborhood, kalkaska window and glass inc.
