Grade comparison question

Post by Stan Hillis »

I know it's probably impossible to match exactly, but what would be the closest Fox grade to a LC Smith 3E, built in 1905?

I would say C based upon price and level of engraving. Still regret selling my 3E 12 ga cir. 1907... It was immaculate.

Yep, probably C grade, but I almost think it would be between a B and a C grade Fox when it comes to engraving. The C grade has barrel wedge engraving and the Smith doesn't. Also more coverage all over for the C grade Fox as compared to the Smith, although the Smith seems to have less coverage, but perhaps better engraving.

Not sure if this would help or not but there is a grade comparison chart posted on Lefever collectors.com

All comparisons lack to some extent, but just looking at catalogue pricing: I don't have a LCS reference for 1905 but in 1912 the LCS Grade 3 listed for $90 and the C Grade Fox was $100. Both in extractor configuration. 10 bucks extra for a CE Fox but I don't know what the Smith premium was for kickers.

Thanks, friends. I agree that any comparison is lacking...... well put Frank. But, pricing is a pretty fair means, I guess. There were 12 grades listed for pre-'13 Smiths, which makes it even tougher to compare.

In the Hunter Arms Co. catalog I have the List Price for an L.C. Smith No. 3E was $115, exactly the same as the List Price for a CE-Grade Ansley H. Fox in the 1905-06 "Finest Gun in the World" catalog. In the 1906, Wm. Read & Sons catalog, the list prices are exactly the same, but the actual Net selling price of the L.C. Smith No. 3E was $90 and the Ansley H. Fox CE-Grade was $85.
