Non Toxic options?
Non Toxic options?
What does everyone use for non toxic for waterfowl. I’m thinking of using my Sterlingworth for woodies in the fall this year. Maybe late season divers also. Thanks

Re: Non Toxic options?
I have had the best success using Kent Tungsten Matrix for waterfowl, and have also tried the 'new' Bismuth, which I like very much as a backup when I can't find the load combos in Tungsten. I use a range of loads from 2 3/4" #4 and 5s for decoyed ducks, #3 for larger divers and puddlers at maximum range, up to 3" 1 3/8 oz. of BBs for Canada geese. Kevin

I was leaning towards tungsten Matrix but can’t find any locally. Sucks being in NY. Shipping is an issue. I might have my dealer order some.
I wasn’t sure about regular heavyshot if it was safe. I have 1 box of classic doubles in 16 ga. I could use for the woodies.

Hevi-shot is too hard for use on classic guns. Will mess up the barrels as it is much harder then Bismuth or Lead.Woody wrote:I was leaning towards tungsten Matrix but can’t find any locally. Sucks being in NY. Shipping is an issue. I might have my dealer order some.

Re: Non Toxic options?
I have used Kent Tunsten Matrix, Kent Bismuth, Rio Bismuth with good success. RST Nice Shot was good while it lasted. I have bought some RST Bismuth for the upcoming season and will see how that does

if the gun is up to the pressure, i really like the Kent products, the Super Fox handles it well, as does the LC Smith Longrange and the 3 frame Parker
you can get bismuth for reloading from Precision reloading, although the selection at the moment is limited
i fortunately have a stash of nice shot in several sizes i use for the lower pressure loads in some guns and for the short tens which i cannot buy rounds for

New kid on the block is Rio loading Bismuth. Here is what they offer and it is indeed cheaper then some of the other stuff out there:

Re: Non Toxic options?
I use bismuth 4s, but I've got lots of it and reload my own. At the ranges at which most of my woodies are shot I could prolly kill them with rock salt. "Long range woodies" here is an oxymoron. When I was young, and lead was legal, I killed many a woodie with 7 1/2s.
Classic Doubles is the worst non-tox I ever used in my vintage doubles. I had way more cripples with it than any other non-tox, including "late-model" steel in modern guns.
Your situation may be different AFA the ranges at which you shoot woodies, however.

I do reload so loading up some bismuth is an option. I may Just buy a few boxes RST bismuth. Just need to decide on 5’s or 6’s.
Stan most my shots on woodies are 30 yards or less. The average probably is 25 yards. That’s where I like to be. Perfect distance.
