A visit to Dewey Vicknair's shop

Post by Silvers »

Yours truly was at Dewey's shop yesterday while coming home from a biz trip. I'd met Dewey last year at the Hidden Hollow Classic shoot but that was a brief intro. Yesterday Dewey gave me a lot of time and overall I was very impressed with the gentleman and his operation.

His custom sideplate Fox action was there along with many others in progress or awaiting repairs. I liked the cocking window indicators, and the fit of its sideplates was very, very precise. I also looked at Dewey's early Fox Pin Gun with its chiseled Becker style breech balls. As a regular sporting clays shooter I'd have to say the sighting plane down that rib was absolutely awesome. Dewey does know Fox 'smithing and it was great "talking shop" with him.

As one who is familiar with metal working and machine tools and I was also impressed by seeing things like a surface plate, a rack holding many sizes of chisels in their place, etc., etc. I've been in too many other shops that were helter-skelter, or where it was obvious that precision work might not be coming back.

We discussed a custom Becker style project for myself and now I have to come up with a decent Fox to re-do. Well, another excuse to run past my wife. Silvers

Sorry I missed you, Frank. I was there Wednesday AM. I'm also sorry to say that my Becker project is ahead of you in line. I don't know if you saw my project or not. If you have any need for ideas, I have lots of them, as Dewey can attest. Murphy

Bill, I'm also sorry I missed you. No I didn't see your Becker project; probably good I didn't because I was slobbering over Dewey's Pin Gun and he's probably used to it. I wouldn't want yours to get all rusty. :)

Dewey told me he'll be at the Blue Ridge SxS shoot on April 5. I'll be at Binghamton with the Leatherstocking Vintagers, rats, it's the same day. Well I'll get to shoot Dewey's Becker Pin Gun at the Northeast SxS Classic at Hidden Hollow. Maybe he'll let me shoot it for the Bo-Whoop event  Take care Bill. Frank

Frank, it's too bad you didn't see the Becker clone while you were visiting. It had been there an entire day so I assume it was well along toward completion. Has that been your experience with project guns in the past? Murphy
