Sterlingworth barrel weight question

Post by mojave30cal »

The barrels on my 1928 Philly Sterlingworth weigh exactly 3 1/2 lbs.
What barrel weight number would that make them? 1,2,3 or 4??

Oops, sorry! It's a 12 ga. with 30 inch barrels.

Assuming your scale is accurate, I'd say they are 3-weight. Silvers

Supposedly the weights given are before striking, so I'd say Silvers is right; 3-weight. I don't know how much effect striking has on weight (any opinions here?); my 12ga 28" barrels weigh 3lbs-7.1 oz and I've always assumed they're #3's.

Well, my scales are accurate, but the barrel length is 28 instead of 30
inches. Sorry. It seems the guy I bought my Sterlingworth from can't
use a measuring device worth a damn! I took him at his word. It's
still a very nice 12 ga. though and it should be a great shooter.

Mojave, do you know what the bore size is? If the barrels were honed the actual weight won't tell you much. Silvers

Yeah, they were honed from Mod/Full to Imp. Cyl/Mod. Hope that
answers your question.

Mojave, no - were the barrel bores honed out? Not the chokes. Honing would make the barrels lighter in terms of mass - pounds and ounces.

I have an AE 12 ga with #2 30' barrels, serial is 32981, they weigh 3lb 7.5oz on an accurate scale.Barrels are without ejector blades and cocking mechanism, the bores are .726 and chokes .691, so I would assume they have not been messed with FWIW
