XE

I would like to know when the frame rebates and extra tang screw were added to the xe. I would also be interested in knowing if there was a time period for the change in engraving depth occurred or if was was on a gun by gun basis. Thank you in advance.

Based on my observations the extra deep XE engraving appears on guns before about 1916. Frame rebates occur on all but the very earliest XE's. The extra tang screw comes and goes through the years. I have a 1918 XE with the extra screw and a 1921 without the screw, I have seen XE's post 1921 with the screw. Also, I have seen three XE's without the breech ball contour following the barrel rib contour. The wood on the early gun was awesome, I have handled late 20's XE that had C or lower grade wood in my opinion.

Thanks for the information. I always assumed at some point all of the later guns had the extra screw. The more I learn the more I find out how little I really know.
