Opinions please

Post by SPE33 »

Went to the gun show over the weekend looking for Foxes.Found an early A that I passed on.Saw a fellow with a sxs in hand and went over to take a look.He hands me a 1902 D.M.Lefever Sons and Company D-grade 12 gauge. It was made in Syracuse NY and was equipped with 30" barrels, ejectors and was built without a safety.Only detraction was the old, hard recoil pad.Foxes are my favorite but this gun was too nice to pass on. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. It took the title of oldest double in the cabinet away from my 1908 B-Grade.As soon as I save up some more money the hunt will continue.

Those are the guns I wish would be reintroduced, in the small gauges. I looked over a DM Lefever 7D in 12ga some time ago, this one had two sets of barrels--one damascus and one fluid steel, and a single trigger. Seller also had a LAC 16ga, a plain DS grade with fluid steel bbls, and I bought that one for a hunting gun. If ever I were going to be a collector that 7D would have been the time to start.

The recoil pad will be easy to replace, enjoy the new toy!

If this is the later box lock Lefever the safety is just above the trigger on the right side of the gun. A Silvers pad would be appropriate. Is there a grade letter on the water table and photos would be appreciated.

No safety at all. This is an early box-lock D.M.Lefever with the cross-bolt closing system.I had never seen one before. It also has a Miller single trigger.Been thinking it may have been built as a' pigeon gun". I have a Silvers pad to put on it.I will work on pictures but I will need someone to e-mail them to to post for me if possible.

The safety, if present, on a D.M Lefever is a roller through the top-tang. The button through the stock cheeks just above the trigger is the selector for old Danl's single trigger on these guns. You can send the pictures to AHFCA@comcast.net

Researcher: Sure do like that new word "squack". You didn't learn it in No. Virginia; must be a Washington (state) thing.
