Fox and Pheasants

Post by 3birddogs »

This happy young man was quite successful with his Fox SW 20 ga. His father bought it from me for his son's graduation present. It is a very good condition Savage era gun, I had two, so was happy to sell him this one. The young man prefers SXS's to OU's, and also shoots his grandpa's Lefever Nitro Special 12 ga.. The setters are mine. The other gun is my SW 16 ga. It also is a Savage gun that somone cut the barrels to 26.5" and it has a very nice replacement butt stock. The gun fits me well and it still has plenty of choke and makes a great pheasant gun.

BTW, this was at our sportmans club in eastern Ohio, where the club owns 3000 acres and has managed switch grass , sorghum, and brush fields for the pheasants and rabbits. The cover is quite dense and these pheasants run like the devil making it quite difficult for the dogs to hold them--makes me see why labs are so popular as pheasant dogs. Ideally, a well trained flush dog and pointing dog would be ifdeal hunting partners.(me and my dogs with a Lefever G 16 damascus)

Good job Harold! The best way to get the younger generation involved is one at a time

You got that right Mills, and I know your sons are on the right path! Luckily we have not gotten any snow in our area, and I will be out after pheasants again tomorow--hmm, trying to figure out which double to carry, either the Fox pin gun or the dainty Parker DHE O frame, st. grip 16 ga--what a problem to have.

Wait a minute Harold, have I seen this DHE 16, or are you holding out on me?

Great of you to throw some fuel on that young man's fire when it comes to vintage doubles. Wish I had a Sterlingworth 20ga at his age!

Mike,
I have had the DHE 16 with me at Drakes and Hausmann's, but dont remember if you saw it. It is an O frame, with 26'
cyl/mod chokes(letters), and a straight grip. It is a little short for me at 13 7/8" LOP. I dont shoot it very much, but think I will use it tomorrow. Carried the Fox A 16 on Sunday, 2 shots-2 birds. Iput my 4 month old setter Fancy out and walked her around and low and behold she went on point--I walked in and found a dead pheasant--I think she will do fine.
