repair vs. restore

Post by Gw0557 »

I've finally managed to find my first Fox. Although I've been searching for a 16ga for years, at a local shop I stumbled on a very tight 12ga 28" MxF Sterlingworth. Super clean barrels which are probably a conservative 85% or bettet. No rust inside or out. Case coloring is worn off of the receiver but again there is no rust. Quick serial number reference makes this a 1913 Philly gun.

The only hitch is that the stock was cut down to 13".   I'm also not super happy about the mod and full choke.

So her are my three questions for you all;

1. The gun needs new wood. Since its a Philly gun and I'm a PA homer, would black Walnut from PA be a good choice for restocking?

2. Open the chokes or use spreaders?

3. Lastly, should I get the case color redone or polish the receiver?

I have my own feelings about this, but I'm interested in hearing anyone with a strong opinion one way or the other. The gun and I have an appointment with a good gunsmith on Wednesday, and of course his opinion will be asked as well.

GW,

Just the opinion of one man but here are my thoughts

1. A proper restock is costly. If you can't get the length you need with a period correct pad, look into having a wood stock extension added. Mark Larson http://www.marklarsongunart.com/ is highly recommended by many but there are others.

2. Pattern your gun with numerous loads before you open up the chokes. You may be surprised by the patterns you get.

3. Don't do anything to the receiver.

Cheers,
Marcus

P.S. Welcome from another PA Fox guy
