Post by blackbearhunter »

What does the type numbers on the barrels mean maybe weight?
Like is a #3marked barrels lighter than #4?
How many barrel type numbers are there and what is the weight of the unmarked barrels like say a set 28in.sterlingworth barrels?
just trying to learn..thanks

The heaviest is a #1 and the lightest #4.

If I remember correctly, and I"m sure someone will correct me, but the numbers are stamped before striking.

You can do a search and get the information on how much they approximately weight to each barrel length. I don't know that off the top of my head.

Welcome to board.

The numbers will be 1 thru 4 on most guns. 1 being the heaviest. The exception being the Super Fox bbls. which are usually #0. Often the number will be struck or filed off during the finishing process. MacIntosh's book "The Finest Gun in the World" lists the weights per gauge. For the most part, it's one of those Fox things that we amuse ourselves with but it doesn't mean squat.
