Savage Fox BSE "H" single trigger- doubling problem.

Post by Bullet »

It was purchased "used" and cheap at a gun show about 20 years ago and I never used it that much until two years ago. It was in mint looking condition. Now I know why it was so cheap. When both barrels are loaded with anything heavy -the second barrel goes off on its' own. I've had it to two "gunsmiths" who can't seem to solve the problem. The trigger sears look good as does everything else, springs etc. Right now it is at another shop and he thinks it is an "inertia block" problem. The second "gunsmith" made minor adjustments and told me that I had to make shure that the action was broken open all the way to set the cocking devices "solid" . Any advice? This is Ontario, Canada and good "gunsmiths" are hard to find.

I thought someone would answer you by now but it seems few have the energy to do that. Not to leave you hanging; a long time ago I had a Ford hot rod with a Fordomatic transmission and I changed it over to a 3 speed manual. At the same time my buddy had an Oldsmobile with a Hydramatic transmission and he converted it too. Yep both of them were "matics" but the trannies were made by two different companies and much different design. With that comparison made, you're on the classic A H Fox Forum and you are writing about a "Fox' that is a totally different design. I believe your your "Fox" is a variant of the Stevens Model 311 design and you might do better by asking the question on another forum like doublegunshop.com. Silvers

Thanks "Silvers" ! Knowledge is a wonderful thing and it does come from all sources. Although I have one other old 16 Ga. vintage "Fox" that would qualify me for membership - am just a "shooter". I will take your concern & advice and thanks for the car comparison - it was priceless !

What a dim view of people here who might have the knowledge yet would ignore an inquiry. Are the experts really that despicable on this forum as to refrain from helping someone with a non-Ansley Fox?

"Silvers" don't start a riot over my own stupidity. Don't worry I have located some parts from Numerich and will "muddle through" on my own although you are right -it feels somewhat like not being made welcome at a high class party. As you said - "there are other forums" I appreciate your intervention on my behalf.

Bullet,

Please don't be offended by not receiving any responses to your inquiry. I think most of us here are not Fox mechanics and couldn't offer any intelligent fixes for your problem. And I think most, myself included, would not even think of taking a screwdriver to our Fox'es. They rarely need fixin' so why take a chance and mess up a nice qualified sharp screw slot. Buggered screw slots are ugly. :(

Lots of neat stuff gets discussed here so stick around and give us a an easier question like "What's better, a single selective trigger or two triggers?" Or "What's all the fuss about 32 inch barrels?" :D

"jolly bill" - no offence taken ! Since I have joined the "party" I will be happy to keep my membership active because after all of these years and the many various scatterguns I have owned I am a S X S fanatic - started out with one ##-------> going out with several ! - including my older 16 guage " straight stocked real Fox" that has never caused a problem and goes "Bang !" each time I want it to. Don't worry ! I will be watching the "Forum" from the sidelines. As a Canadian who became very active fighting our recent useless "total firearm registry" (and helping in its' abolishment) - I am not going away soon from fellow gun owners like ourselves. Now - enough on the matter and let's enjoy the "Forum" ###--------> Bullet.
