Early D grade Forearm

Post by vaturkey »

Morning all,

Wondering if anyone has a nice picture of an early D grade small frame in their inventory anywhere. Am thinking about doing a semi-custom (nothing fancy, just rebates on the frame and a bit of shaping on the forearm metal to resemble the graded guns) on a small frame and having it stocked and subsequently engraved as an early D. While there are some good pictures of the engraving on our home page, can't find any pics anywhere of early D grade with a snap on fore arm. Want to see the checkering style and whether there was anything special done to the fore arm tip. Based on the Fox Book, there were certainly a few of them made and they have to be out there somewhere I'm thinking (or hoping). FWIW, I've decided this one will be in 16 gauge with long barrels and an extractor gun. Have my walnut inbound and I think the donor gun will be inbound to Dan R. this evening aboard the brown truck. Appreciate any help out there for sure.

I was able to examine #200108, a very early DE 20-ga. with 30" bbls., 3" chambers and snap-on forend, now owned by a Michigan collector at the Yooper Shoot this past weekend. This very gun was featured in an article "The First D Grade 20 Bore" written by Tom Kidd in the DGJ (Vol. III, Issue 1, Spring 1992). The little Fox had no rebates or special treatment to the forend tip.

Thanks much. The tip was what I was really wondering about. I'd like for it to really be match to the early D Grades in about every way possible. Guess I'm not surprised about the lack of rebates. Seems like those adornments came later in the run. I'll see if I can find that copy of DGJ somewhere. Seems like its something I really need to see first hand.
