Gun Storage?

Post by SmithShady »

I'm currently looking for a better place to store my guns than hiding them in silicone socks in the back of my closet. I've been looking at gun cabinets/safes and trying to decide what to do. I need something that locks for sure, to keep my son (who's only two right now) from having access to them. I'm torn between a safe, which would provide high security, and a gun cabinet where I could enjoy them on display when they are not in use. So, I was wondering how you guys have chosen to store or display your Fox guns, and why? I'm also wondering what position you've chosen to store them in (vertical vs horizontal?, Barrels up vs down?).

Thanks,

Mike

A walk-in gun vault with additional safe storage is the only long term solution for this disease --

I made a custom interior for my safe to store the doubles muzzle down and not on top of each other so they don't get dinged going in/out of the safe. No display for me other than letting trusted friends take a peek in the safe.

Researcher, that's a very nice setup you have but where do you clean them?

Dave,
I'm in the process of either buying another, #3, safe, or converting an upstairs room into a vault. Explain what you did to create this vault room because that's the direction I would like to go. I'm sure I could do it for around the same cost as a safe.

Thanks,
Daryl

Mike,

I have a vault built similar to Dave's. The plans stem from a government vault that had to be built to earthquake standards. If you want to PM me, I'd be happy to share them with you. It's not really as expensive as you might think, especially when you consider itemizing every gun you have for insurance purposes. The two goals, at least for me, were theft and fire. Nothing is going to be totally theft proof, but the idea is slow them down as much as possible. If you make it big enough like Dave's, you enjoy the best of all worlds.

And I thought I was bad with a gun room and two safes. Now that’s Heaven, a Gun Room that is a Safe, that’s what everyone needs. The problem with Safes is they are never big enough, you buy one when you start collecting thinking its huge and the next thing you know you’re buying third one, etc…

Researcher we are all very impressed…

Oh barrels always down.....

Best Regards,

Wow. I feel like the rookie who just saw the statues in Yankee Stadium for the first time. Fortunately (or unfortunately, I guess) I don't need that much room for my hunble collection (since I'm just an old bird hunter and not a collector I call it my "selection"), and I'm old school; there's nothing more attractive than seeing a nice array of beautiful guns displayed with some space around them behind glass in a gun cabinet. And, right or wrong, they just look funny "upside down" .

Man Dave, and I thought a safe was going to be expensive, now I need a bigger house! I'm in love with your vault and the idea of having a room dedicated to my guns. Unfortunately, unless I throw everything away in my walk in attic, I don't have the room to finish off something like that. As Witty pointed out, I'm concerned with the size of whatever I buy. I can't say that I plan on having a huge collection of guns, but then again if you'd asked me 6 months ago, I wouldn't have predicted that I'd own as many as I do now. I may start with a cabinet that will hold what I have today, and give me a little bit of room for growth. I've found several for sale locally that aren't too expensive. The question there is, why are 95% of them built to hold guns barrels up? I've always heard barrels down too, but most safes and cabinets are not designed this way.
