Need a new rubber butt pad

Post by ViperR »

Hey all,
Appreciate the help you guys gave m in the past! What i need now is some help and suggestions for replacing the dry-rotted rubber butt stock pad on my Sterlingworth. I removed the pad and the plastic w/integrated washers and screws are good. But the rubber is dry rotted and is a powdered mess.
What have you guys done for this? Is there a rubber pad part that I can epoxy to the plastic spacer and shape or sand belt for proper forming?
The original is a solid rubber, as you all know. What have you guys used and what tips can you tell me? I want to do this myself.
Thanks!

BTW, I found an excellent 'low recoil' buckshot load that I have been re-loading on my LEE press. Very mild and fun to shoot! My local indoor range allows BS loads and these are fun!

Galazan and Brownell's sell replica No-Shok and Jostam HY-GUN pads. Galazan also sells original Silvers and a reproduction Silvers pad called the "Period Correct" all which would be age appropriate for your Sterlingworth. Unfortunately no one, to my knowledge, is making the Jostam Anti-Flinch pad which was the most widely used pad originally installed on Sterlingworth and lower grade Fox guns.

If the gun was mine and I was looking for a replacement pad I'd keep an eye on Ebay for an original Hawkins pad as shown in the below photo.

My Parker Trojan had a still-good Redhead pad on it, but the LOP was too short. I liked the pad and wanted to keep it, so I ordered a spacer from Brownell's. I shaped the new spacer and sanded the old spacer off the pad, then glued the pad to the new spacer with Barge contact cement. It may not be the most attractive fix, but it worked:

I suppose you could do the same thing in reverse: put new rubber on the old spacer. However, since you'll have to shape it anyway it will probably be easier to replace the whole pad.

My Sterlingworth 16ga has a Hawkins pad; don't know if they're exactly period correct, but I think it looks good on the gun:

Thanks for the replies! I looked all of them up and it looks like many are out of stock. Until I come across one that is close to OEM, a friend of mine gave me two Pachmayr pads for free. I installed one of them and turned out fairly nice. Belt sanding took a while, though. It is just screwed to the butt, so I don't have to break any adhesive when I get a new one. Not worried about it coming off during recoil with my extremely light buckshot loads.

Fin2feather, you have a few leather covered pads in those weathered seat covers. What car is that?

I went through the grade 16-gauge records trying to find recoil pad requests by brand. The first time I find a Hawkins pad being specified was 301741, an XE-Grade which is written up on a big "Fox Special" card which indicates to me it was finished up in the Savage-era.

My Sterly is 372XXX and definitely Savage-era so that makes sense. My Callahan letter doesn't mention it so it was probably after market.

Eightbore, the car is my bro-in-law's old Chevy Tahoe hunting wagon.
