AH Fox serial number 1003c

Post by irv430 »

I'm looking for information for my AH Fox. It's a gun my grandfather won in a poker game in Philadelphia in the 50s. My father hunted with it when I was a kid. He has passed away and it is now in my possession. Any information would be great. I am also curious about its value. I have included some pictures. Thanks

You have a very nice looking very early C grade with scroll engraving, I estimate less than 200 C's were engraved with scroll engraving on the action sides. The trigger plate should have a dog most likely a setter. It is almost impossible to place a value on your gun from the small pictures provided. Value is influenced by condition and rarity, your gun is quite rare but the condition appears good. I would guess $2500. to $4500. Check out this link to our home page for pictures of a gun the same as yours. http://www.foxcollectors.com/ah_fox/content/ce_fox.html

There are only a handful of surviving production cards for Ansley H. Fox shotguns with serial numbers below 9600. There is no surviving information for serial number 1003. I would like to know what Patent dates are on the watertable?

The very early A.H. Fox Gun Co. guns I have observed with one-, two- and low three-digit serial numbers have --

PAT'D AUG.1 1905
OTHER PATENTS PENDING

Your gun is in a serial number range range I haven't recorded this information for.

Ansley H. Fox guns in the 13xx, 17xx and well up in the four-digit range carry --

PAT'D AUG.1 1905
OCT.17 1905- JAN.16 1906

Late in 1906 the A.H. Fox Gun Co. bought the entire plant of Philadelphia Arms Co. on North 18th Street and Windrim Avenue, and moved there from their original location at the corner of Wayne & Bristol Streets. With that purchase the A.H. Fox Gun Co. acquired the Patents that had belonged to Philadelphia Arms Co., and eventually added those 1902 and 1904 dates to the roll-stamp of Patent Dates on their receivers --

PAT'D DEC 2 1902
AUG.16 1904 AUG.1 1905
OCT 17 1905 JAN 16 1906
