Fagen Stocked Sterlingworth

Post by ROMAC »

I'm typically a traditionalist but I must admit I like the look of a certain style of Bird's Eye Maple and/or Tiger Striped maple. I already had a 16 Sterlingworth, now I've got two. I wish this gun could talk to me. I'd love to hear the story about who had it done.

I got it in Greenville Delaware in the heart of former Dupont Fox Hunt country which is not too far from Pintail Point. No story came with it so if anybody out there has ever seen it before I'd sure appreciate hearing from them. It is kinda hard to forget about it once you have seen it.

This Savage/Fox Sterlingworth 16 just spoke to me when I saw it. It locks up tight and has mirror bores. Barrels measure 28 inches. I can't wait to try it out!

Reinhart Fajen did some amazingingly good stock work at very affordable prices. I was sorry to here that they are no longer in business.

Interesting gun for sure. I'll bet in the right sunshine that maple has a ripple affect in the wood that really shows. Some folks like to stain the maple darker so it looks more like walnut, but I find that pretty special the way it is. I'd get it checkered as some point as it might be a tad slippery if you ever hunt in the rain.

Nice gun with good wood to metal fit. I would have it checkered in the factory pattern. No stain in the checkering please. There is a gun store in Greenville?

The store is new. It is called Artemis Outfitters.

Kind of fancy, had a hunting painting on the wall that could be yours for only $75,000! Several guns in the five figure range. Lots of Fancy clothes. If you were going to England for driven pheasants you could get your Wellingtons here for sure.

Their web site is: artemisoutfitters.com

Just a wacky thought. If you like darker wood you might get the stock stained/refinished while getting the checkering cut. One of my passions is flintlock longrifles and here's one that's built in a 1750's pattern as might have been carried by J F Cooper's Hawkeye in the F&I War period. She's stocked in semi curly maple that was stained reddish brown. Yup, you can have hard maple most any way you want.... light to dark. Silvers

Silvers, I'm not much of a tinkerer. I like it just the way it is. Besides, it matches my all original Savage 1899 A (letttered with provenance) and my custom muzzleloader. I have a soft spot for this type of wood.

Now that I think about it, I have one maple gun. It is a Winchester 1892 in 25-20, stocked by John Oberlies in Dayton, Ohio.
