Refurbishing my Dad's Sterlingworth

Post by thepalm0314 »

Gentlemen....I am a new member and glad to be here.

I have an old sterlingworth from my father which is in pretty rough condition. I would like to get it completely redone and give to my son. Any suggestions as to who can do the job. I have done things with Turnbull before but quite expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

regards,

Palm

Palm, what I've learned is that info on good SxS refurbishing gunsmiths is usually kept close to the chest and only shared between friends, not on a public forum. It's human nature, and that's the way it is. There's a whole lot more SxS work out there, than there are good people to do it. Here's a likely scenario... someone asks for a good refurbishing contact, person X comes forth with a recommendation to use Mr. Y, the information is on the world wide web and numerous people contact Y and he gets an increased level of work, and then when X wants more work done by Y he has to get in a longer queue than he did the last time. Or maybe Y tells X he's sorry but he's so very busy and isn't taking in any new work. It's a self defeating proposition. My recommendation is to contact other SxS enthusiasts you may know, look at work they've had done on their guns, and get the gunsmith's name and contact info when you see work that looks good. Since you've had work done by Mr. Turnbull it sounds like you're already in the SxS fold, and would know other gents who are vintage SxS enthusiasts. Silvers

Palm: Tell us where you are located & we might know someone close by. I had my dad's Sterlingworth restored years ago by Jim Kelly at The Darlington Gun Works, Darlington, SC and he did a magnificant job. I was able to give it back to my dad not long before he passed away and I thought that I saw tears in his eyes remembering hunts and dogs and hunting partner long gone.

Best Regards, George
