refinish or not

Post by tony williamson »

I got my old strly back from my good friend. It has most of the finish gone from various places . Should i go ahead and put several coats of tung oil and hand rub the finish or leave it alone. I am a little worried about it being unprotected. It may have a little finish left. Blueing is 95% cc50%.

I have had great luck using Minwax semi-gloss spray urethane over the chipped/worn finish on Sterly's and A grade shooters. The lower graded Foxes had a spray on lacquer finish that was very prone to chipping. The Minwax spray urethane bonds very well to the original finish and seals the wood. No need to sand the wood. Great if you want to the stock to appear old, matching the un-refinished metal and still seal the wood for hunting. Use two light coats, tape off the metal, drys hard in 72 hours. True-oil is much more difficult to work with to get the correct tone, it always looks refinished in my opinion.

Craig,

Great tip....I'm gonna file that one away, thanks! Sounds nice and easy and if you like the way it comes out I know it will be good.
