As I've posted, I am a new member to the forum and new to Fox shotguns. I recently purchased a Sterlingworth and send it to Dewey Vicknair because the RST would not seat in the guns shallow rim recesses.
I ask him about restoring it and he suggest, because of some external pitting on the receiver, that it wouldn't be worth the money.
I found a Fox A grade at Cabelas that looks like it is solid but needs some TLC. I would never consider altering a nice original, but this one looks like it needs some work.
I would consider having the barrels reblued, the receiver case-colored , a stock fitting done and a extra fancy stock installed.
I would appreciate an opinion from some Fox Collectors on the Fox A grade I found online at Cabelas Gun Libary, # 1162218.

What it sound slike you want to do is a complete restoration. Not worth it in my opinio. you can find A Grade 12's in super shape for far elss than what most of the "name" guys out there owuld charge. Buy a better condiiton gun and hun/shoot it as is.

It's possible to have built a custom Fox as you describe ...all new finishes, choked as you wish, stocked with fancy black walnut to your exact dimensions for $2500-3,000. That means you could have a basic, "as new" Philly Fox 12ga A grade for about $4,000. There are a multitude of decent new and secondhand SxS's around for that. On several occasions I've come across nicely redone or project Foxes that someone else paid the freight on. Oftentimes, someone else's modernized Fox can be had for $2,000-2500. There's also an intangible satisfaction to being the "general contractor" on your own gun. Even more if you do some of the work yourself. I'm working on the fifth in my possession. Several others have come and gone. Only you can decide what it's worth it to you to own one of Ansley's done up as you like.
Beware the man with one gun...he likely will bore you to death in others ways, too.

That Cabelas A grade doesnt look all that bad, maybe a little pricey, but looks like all original, except for the wood refinish. I also noticed a Steringworth ejector, 30" F/F, only 7 lbs, with a very nice stock, SN is 91435, so an earlier Sterlingworth. I like the 3" DAH also. Wood appears refinished, but nice job, and barrel/trigger guard may also be redone, but cosmetically, a nice looking gun. Again, price seems a little high, but more than a few dollars was probably put towards the refinish work.HardCash wrote: I would appreciate an opinion from some Fox Collectors on the Fox A grade I found online at Cabelas Gun Libary, # 1162218.

To me that looks like a pretty nice A Grade at a very reasonable price. I would offer them $1,200 & see what they say.

I offered 'em $1200, however the lowest they had to have was $1350. I should receive it on Monday, Nov 16th.
