Graded gun buttplate question

Post by Brian »

I have to replace a cracked plate on a CE. I noticed that the periphery of the screw hole counterbores has an annular ring. Is this consistent with all graded guns. I have seen it both ways.

Did they use different buttplates on graded guns than Sterlingworths?? Mine all look the same. excpet for that ring

Who has a plate for the C grades? Is Tonys close?

If I have it right, the butt plates changed to the ones with the ring around the screw holes, about the time the Godshalks took over from Ansley. It certainly appears that the A.H. Fox Gun Co. used the same butt plate from Sterlingworth to FE-Grade. Butt plate screws usually begin showing some engraving with the C-/CE-Grade, but this may well vary with time frame too. A skeleton steel butt was an extra cost option on any graded gun, and the records show even A-grades ordered with a skeleton steel butt.
