Funky Chickens

Post by birdawg »

I am just wonder if anyone has come across this Fox engraving?
My guess is, it is a East Coast engravers rendition of the description of something like a Gambles or Mountain Quail.

Of course it could be Scaled Quail with the wind vortex from their high speed running.

I too would like to see some more pix. I have lived in the Flint Hills of Kansas most of my 71 years and have never missed a prarie chicken[pinnated grouse] season since it opened, I think in 1954. That doesn't look like any chicken I have ever seen and I have them all over the ranch and enjoy watching the on the "lek". Lee.

Neat picture Frank! I'd like to know where it was taken. The stone barn behind them looks like home territory. Strange, no doubles of any kind in the picture. Thats unusual I think. Lee.

Lee and Jess, yep looks like at least two Winchester 97 pump guns. Sounds like an interesting trip, 2000 miles on primitive roads in a 1905 car, Minnesota to Manitoba, then thru ND to Frederick SD where the pic was taken. Here's a part of the story (from a 1905 American Field newpaper). Frank

Wow!!!! "The rest of the story" as Paul Harvey said is even better!!! I have pix of the ranch here somplace that my grandmother took showing a man on a horse in the Bluestem of the Flint Hills with the only part visible is from the waist up. I still have native Bluestem, and in the county that is 4 feet tall, but not much anymore. Thanks for the remeberances. Lee.

Guys, it wouldn't have always been Winchester 97"s, I think I see a Bannerman [Spencer] and a Winchester 1983. Lee.

Sure looks like two Winchester pumps in the front seat and the new Remington Autoloading Gun in the back seat to me. I don't see a tiny Spencer forearm in that picture. My second cousin Edna (Baker) Huff of Minnesota shot a Spencer into the 1930s when she and Willis finally got a second Winchester Model 12.

At home I have a similar auto travel and duck shooting article of 1911 vintage, by Edwin Hedderly, the editor of Western Field, and big promoter of long barrel small-bore Parker Bros. doubles for California waterfowl.

Frank, that trip brings back sweet memories. When I was in college a friend and I made the trip from Minneapolis to The Pas, Manatoba, to hunt ducks and geese, a trip of about 1000 miles in a 1952 Ford. The last 150 miles was a dirt road, The Pas was an indian town, and that was the end of the road!
