About 5 months ago I found an early B grade, s/n 2800's in pretty nice shape except for its stock that was cracked through the wrist, screw-pinned, and fitted with an aluminum splint to help reinforce it. I considered getting the stock properly repaired with walnut insert pieces in the wrist area, but the inletting cuts inside were wrecked by the gent who did the previous repair. No go. The gun has been out at PGS Services for a new stock to match the original, and today I dropped in to check on it. Heading is complete and the guys are starting to get it shaped up to my dimensions. I thought you might enjoy some pics of the work in progress. The last two pics are a bit out of focus, I goofed up with the camera, but you'll get the idea.
While there I checked on a late 1st gen BE owned by a member, also another cool and hush-hush Fox project being done for... well let's just say the gents know who I'm referring to. Lookin' good guys. Silvers
Lookin good Frank. What are the specs of the new stock? What pad will she wear? Finish? And of course we want to know the specs on the barrels and is their finish original.
Mike, new stock will be round knob and have a real Silvers pad, both same as when when I bought her. New dimensions will be higher and longer than she had, but a bit lower and less LOP than I shoot on target guns. Kind of a compromise. This B grade will be for hunting. 30" barrels are heavy, not weight stamped but probably 1-weights. Chokes will remain at 35 and 40. They are opposite the norm, 35 is on the left. Bluing is VG and frame finish still has some cc and will not be touched. I'll have the forend checkering cleaned up. Checkering on the new stock and cheeks will be exactly the same as the old B stock. Finish is up in the air right now. Dan is doing up some walnut "coupons" for me with different finishes. He's working with me to duplicate the original Fox finish - to the closest extent possible with modern materials. More to come. Frank
Nice project. Please keep us posted. My early A-grade is at PGS Services for mechanical repair. It also has a cracked stock that I plan to have pinned for now. Perhaps I'll have PGS restock it later.
