On the Mississippi River…

Post by spyder »

There were quite a few GW teal, but other ducks were scarce or hard to call in. A lot of pintails flew over high and fast having nothing to do with us. Our group shot 26 GWT. I got a widgeon too but unfortunately didn’t get a picture :(

Great post and pic Spyder, were you hunting a bank blind (dug into the bank from the looks of the pic background)? Nice rig but no wonder a lot of them eluded you; clear skies and a "long reach" for them to scope out your decoys. Pintails always fascinated me in the way they approach a rig, not unlike Cans - high and tight at breakneck speed. Maybe one time out of 3 or 4 flocks drilling the rig would they put on the brakes, drop out, and set up to decoy. Only had the chance to shoot them half a dozen times but what a graceful bird! Great rout on GWT, a feast on the barby for sure!! Kevin

You’re spot on Kevin. We were in large plastic farm water tanks set into the sand. We normally hunt on Reelfoot Lake which suffered some vandalism this summer. Some teenagers opened the spillway that controls the lake level. As you may know, Reelfoot is really a shallow bayou, and a 1 ft drop in the water level made parts of it unnavigable. Furthermore, there hasn’t been enough rain to refill the lake. Our long standing guide can’t get to his blind which is set in one of the back sloughs. So he made due on the river.

You've got my mouth watering, Spyder. How I love to eat teal!

Have hunted Reelfoot, too. It was the opening days (2) of teal season a few years ago. We wore the teal out. It was so warm I hunted in flip-flops. Bill Blackley was our guide. I think he's quite a "fixture" at Reelfoot.
