Geese are headed north

Post by Silvers »

On my neighbor's farm pond this afternoon ..... more geese at one location than I've seen since hunting many years ago on James Bay in Ontario.

Great come back in population as we can recall 3 years numbers where so low there was need for the bag take to 1 goose only. :

Not so great here in MD Tom as they are considering going back to 1 bird, 30 days, and quite possibly we could see a ban like we did years ago. It all depends on the nesting success this spring.

I have been watching our goose and Sand Hill Crane populations that overwintered instead of heading South. Due to heavy ice coverage they were bunched up on any open water they could find. There have been multiple reports from across the state of MI of goose and sand hill crane deaths due to avian flu. The theory according to our DNR is that the birds bunching up in close proximity to each other near open water has exposed more birds to the disease.
