Info Request

Post by 2a808 »

New Fox Collectors member. I inherited from my grandfather a Savage Fox Sterlingworth 12 gauge double barrel shotgun. I would like any help you can give me on the date of manufacture, etc. Here are the specifications:

Serial Number 133194 - on barrel; stock; forearm and trigger guard
30 " barrels
Walnut stock and forearm
Marked on barrels as: Savage Arms Corporation Utica NY USA and Special Alloy Forged Steel
2-3/4" chamber
Fox Sterlingworth on both sides of the receiver

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. only has photocopies of the production cards for graded guns, A to FE. No cards for the Sterlingworths. A few years ago, Savage Arms sent all the A.H. Fox production cards to the McCracken Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. You can get a letter on your Fox-Sterlingworth from them.

From my observations, 133194 will be a drawbolt gun with 30-inch barrels. They were made 1939 and later. The drawbolt guns have a wide top tang with a slotted screw head at the back end --

Thanks for the info. I'll reach out to the Center of the West.

Another newby question: A local gunsmith recommended that I get a pair of A-Zoom Snap Caps to store my Sterlingworth. Is this a common practice for these drawbolt shotguns?

much appreciated

Fox advertising back in the day said you could snap the gun all you wanted without snap-caps. That said, all of my Fox shotguns are sitting hammers down on good quality snap-caps.

Thanks. I picked up a couple of the A-Zoom Snap Caps. Have not put them in yet. Do these qualify a good quality?
