Remington SP10 Wads vs. Hornady (Pacific) Versalites

Post by ROMAC »

I know there are a couple of Fox guys that reload light loads for their 10 gauge guns so I want to throw this question out there.

Remington Sp10 wads are drying up and getting hard to find. I have some older Hornady (Pacific)Versalite 10 gauge wads on hand that I have never loaded with.

In the picture you can see the Versalite on the left and the Sp10 on the right. It looks like the Versalite has more volume to contend with.

I'd like to recreate the low pressure 1 1/8 ounce, 2 7/8ths inch load using red dot that I load with the SP10 wad. My first impulse is to just use an entire 16 gauge felt wad (or at least as much of one as needed) to fill up the volume and have at it.

Has anyone ever used Versalite 10 gauge wads? I'd be very interested in any feedback you might have. For instance, I did read that they may not give as tight a seal and thus have a potential incidence of squibs in certain hulls.

The Versalite wad seemed to work fine with one 16 gauge filler wad and 1 1/8 ounce of shot.

I'll test shoot it in my Sarasqueta 3.5 inch 10 gauge SXS to get a feel for the recoil etc...

I'll probably send it off to get tested since I have over 2,000 of the wads. If the pressure is good, I'll be set for a long time.

A Federal hull cut down to 2 7/8th's next to a factory 3.5 inch Steel shell with the Remington SP10 on the left and Hornady Versalite on the Right.

19 grains of Red dot is a creampuff load. I don't have a real worry that pressure will be a problem, even if it is a tad higher than using an SP10 wad.

Roger, just for info I've been fooling around with SP-10's in new 10 ga Cheddite hulls cut to 2-7/8" for my Lefever GE with damascus tubes . The Cheddites have a different volume than Federals and I use a 1/2" 16-gauge sized filler with any of the powders I've tried to include Alliant E3, IMR 700-X and IMR "PB". All those with 1-1/8 ounces of shot. The 1/2" fiber filler is actually about 7/16" thick and the crimps are excellent. Recoil with E3 felt a little sharp and 700-X was a little dirty after firing, and I've settled for now on the "PB" load. I’ve never used Alliant Red Dot powder and thus don't have any to try. Again, jfi. frank

Thanks for the information Frank.

There is a huge list of recipes on the Parker site, including one similar to the one I'm using with SP10 wads, but with 22 grains of Green Dot. A lot of them have been sent out for testing and the reports are that there are some soft shooters.

People need to be aware though that switching out any single component can and will vary results and it is not recommended. I have loaded all the RST hulls that I have on hand with my remaining supply of the SP10 wads, but since they are getting scarce I'm trying to get comfortable with a recipe for the Versalite wads.

The multi-page list that you can find on the Parker site has a few Versalite recipes but they are for heavier loads with higher pressures that I am looking for.

I load 10g 2 7/8" in Cheddite hulls with Unique. Mild recoil and they load great with the 1/2" 16g fiber wads in the bottom of an SP10 shot cup. I normally load 1 1/4 oz of shot, well, it's a 10g and I can.
