G. E. Lewis & Sons Single Shot

Post by ROMAC »

I picked this up off a table at Hauseman's and kept going back to it because it just had a "Cool Factor" about it.

What's not to like about a helll for stout British single barrel that is Nitro proved for 1 1/2 ounces and has a 3 inch chamber with a 32 inch Improved Modified choked barrel. It weighs a hefty 8 lbs. 8.4 ounces but has great balance and feels lighter.

Oh, and the cherry on top is that it is a single side lock with a hammer and Dumoulin style firing pin/plunger system. No ejector, but an extractor. It also has two small ivory beads on the receiver for aid in aiming in low light, there is no rib.

Smoking the first clay at the Fox station where I ran it through its paces later in the afternoon on Thursday gave me a big smile.

Cool gun, Roger. I missed one at auction a few months ago. It was a beauty, with a rib. I really like that yours has such heavy proof, and 3" chambers. Great old waterfowling gun.

Well struck.

Fred, information is limited but based upon reading about other guns with a serial number where the date was known I'm figuring late 1920's to early 1930's.

G. E. Lewis was known for heavy fowlers at the time.

I made some edits to the first post. It actually weighs 8 lbs., 8.4 ounces not 8 lbs., 4 ounces. I mis-remembered.

It also has some tasteful engraving.

That's a lot of hand work for a utility single shot.

It's a great gun, Roger. I hope it doesn't pattern high for you. I have had dismal experience with plain barrel guns (with no top rib) that have a simple bead screwed into the top of the muzzle, lacking a little "ramp" for the bead to fasten to. They have all shot too high for me. Every one. However, I understand it could be a quirk that has to do with my physical build. I also, however, have learned a "trick" that makes one shoot closer to flat. Contact me if yours patterns too high for you.

I like it a lot. You have good taste, IMHO.

Roger, nice gun and pictures. What are you going to use the gun for? Jim

I'd like to shoot a nice fat doe with it on my buddies X-mass tree farm with some classic paper 2 3/4 inch 00 buck shells I have. They usually walk right on down the rows. Its' the bucks that are hard to come by.

Also I could see using it over my friend's pointers with spreader loads for woodcock. They usually sit tight and let us get set.

The hammer makes it a stretch for grouse.
