I just ordered mine.

I finally had a chance to sit down with my copy; as someone who is totally unfamiliar with publishing it seems like it must have been a tremendous undertaking! There is a wide range of interests included, and as I'm sure it will be for everyone, there is much that doesn't interest me (I'm not really interested in a lot of the British stuff, nor in the big game rifles, etc.), but there's a lot that does - how's that for walking both sides of the fence ? I'd say it exudes a certain "quaintness" which I find in most of the things from the DGJ folks, and which certainly appeals to me. I haven't had the chance to go back and read some of the things that caught my eye but I'm looking forward to doing so. I did note some errors of omission which I suppose is to be expected in a product like this. I'd say owning it is a requirement for anyone who wants to complete their DGJ collection, and as with all the things I've seen from the Cotes, it's done with class and style. I'm glad to have my copy.

I was also told that their was more than one copy for sale at the Ohio Gun Collectors Show.

You have seen these personally? And you're sure they were the most recent index and not I or II? I've seen a few DGJ issues for sale here and there; I've even sold a few duplicates myself. But it seems unlikely that any of the indexes, especially III, would be for sale at garage sales frankly.

Wow!! $500 for those of us who didn't order up front! I scanned the table of contents and can't see it will make my life $500 better.

You can get the "standard" edition for $150.00. Not sure what makes the "special" edition so special. $500...wow!

I just wish that Dan had taken some of us up on our offers to assist with proofreading. The errors are not particularly embarrassing but they are not particularly rare either. I am enjoying my Volume 111 very much.

In light of how much complaining was being done about how long it was taking he probably was in "hurry up" mode. Probably lucky there aren't more errors.

My copy just arrived and I am impressed. I had my doubts about it but they came through in style

It tends to favor British guns but there are American doubles too. I noticed a few errors as Bill said but they are a minor issue.

Those who volunteered to proofread work for free and pay their own hotel bills. We are a friendly organization.

As others have said, too bad they didn’t take you up on it.

I read on another forum that the I&R includes an article on pocket knives. While I'm sure it's interesting I wonder about the content availability and shift in "theme" for the I&R. A few years back I submitted a manuscript on 22 caliber shotshells in smoothbore and Routledge bore guns to include extensive patterning, and the editors said they liked it but it didn't fit their "break open gun theme". Scratch about 50 hours of research, testing and writing that could have been of interest to many readers with just a slight stretch of policy. So, now I surmise that an article on break-open pocket knives must have been good to go. frank

Wish they had published that article. I guess they were worried about going down a slippery slope, but that does not apply when they're at the end of the slope.

Anytime you make a submission on the come you're at the mercy of the editors. It can be disappointing (and I know from experience!) but that's just the law of the jungle.

Frank, Dan refused to run the second part of my John Phillip Sousa series because it covered Sousa's Model 10 Remington. The Remington Society Journal did a great job with the second of the Sousa series. I and Tom Breeden would have been better to give the RSA both articles. Dan missed out on an article about Sousa's Lindner Daly pigeon gun. It's still in the hopper. I'm sure many authors were disappointed over the decades. I'm sure Dan couldn't please everyone.
