Hawkins recoil pads

Post by mc15426378 »

Here are three new Hawkins pads I have. The black & orange heart shaped pads measure 5 1/2" x 2" x 1" w/holes 3 3/16 " OC. The orange trestle pad measures 5 1/8" x 1 13/16" x 1 1/16" w/holes 3 1/8" OC. There is no stamp on the base of the heart shaped orange pad, the black pad has a "G" stamped on it's base & the trestle pad has the number "10328" on it's base. The box for the black pad states it fits all medium and large size gun stocks & the boxes for the orange pads state they fit all medium & small stocks.

Anyone know what guns the black pads were for? Any reason for the size difference other than just larger stocks? Has anyone else noticed a color difference between the two styles of orange pads? Mike

The black pads have always been sort of a mystery, but I always thought they were factory. I've never seen a black one in a box, however.

I actually have two of the black ones, but only one box. I've only seen one on a gun and below is the GB link to it.

Looks pretty cool & different to me. A fellow member told me at one time he had an HE with a black trestle pad on it. I've never seen one of those.

What about the color difference in the two orange pads? Anyone else ever notice this?

The linked Sterlingworth is more than weird. Lots of original looking case color, lever position about as far to the left as I have ever seen on an original condition gun, and the black Hawkins which is no way original to the gun. I would like to see the letter on this gun. Mike, has your straight ribbed pad been on a gun? That may explain the color difference.

I am 100% positive both of the orange pads have never been on a gun. This is what has me puzzled on the color difference.

I'll look at my Hawkins pads, but give me a day or two to reply.

Mike,i have a 20 ga GHE Parker with an orange red colored trestle pad. The center trestle pad looks like a brown color to me. Bobby

By definition, "trestle" more accurately describes the two pads on the end. The center pad should be described by a word other than "trestle". I never have figured out what to call it. In about 1990, I told Tony that this was not the pad we would prefer for him to duplicate, he replied, "Why didn't you guys tell me before I went to all this trouble?"

I wish someone would have told him to duplicate the Jostam Anti Flinch pad instead of the Jostam Hy-Gun.

Amen on the Anti Flinch Twice Barrel. I did find a decent used 7 slot AF on Ebay & a good used 6 slot on an obscure gun parts website so if you need one keep your eyes open.

The Hy-Gun Tony has is a nice soft pad but too big IMHO. The Noshoc he has is hard as a brick, seems to be made from pencil eraser material (?), and is really not close to an original Noshoc. Tony does now have the heart pads as a re-pop. Has anyone tried one of these?

Still no thoughts on the black pad? Aren't these old pads neat as heck?

I don't think Tony asks anyone before deciding. I can't believe no one was asked if they wanted a .410 RBL.

Mike, I'm holding on to one new black Hawkins for a special gun. However, it won't be a Fox. The Jostam is the only choice for a Fox.

I went through the 16-gauge records just scanning for recoil pads. I found an XE, an AE with a monte carlo stock, and a couple of SPE-Grades where a Hawkins pad was specified. Earliest was a 3017xx gun.

I have a couple pictures of a black Hawkins on my HE and was going to post them here, but since I posted from photobucket the last time their site has changed and I can't follow my old set of instructions. Could some of you more savvy guys help me out? After I choose the photo I want to send over I used to be able to click "save", then "continue" and I could either choose more photos or open a new tab to the site I wish to post to. Those options aren't there anymore.

What's the new process?

Thanks, Stan
