Question on forearm tip high grade early guns

Post by vaturkey »

Very early high grade small frame guns had the snap on forearms (ala Sterlingworth). Were any of those early guns high grades (D and up) and did those guns have the horn tipped forend treatments done like the later high grade guns with the Deeley latch? Thanks much.

I don't believe the long forearms were added to the high grades until after the graded smallbores got the Deeley latch. A few years ago we got to examine 20-gauge DE-Grade 200108 when Stephen Cobb had it for sale. It had early-style engraving and DE-Grade checkering with the fleur-de-lis as shown in the 1913 "Fox Gets the Game" catalogues. It had a normal length forearm. It was pictured in a Tom Kid article in The Double Gun Journal, Volume Three, Issue 1, pages 36 to 41, but none of the pictures show the tip of the forearm.

Tom also did an article on the prototype 20-gauge, serial number 200000, also a DE-Grade, in Volume Six, Issue 1, pages 39 to 44. That gun shows an ebony forearm tip.
