It's gotta be the gun...
I'm not a great trap shooter, but I have to say, this season has started out quite well for me, and this J Grade will da*n sure bust 'em!

Re: It's gotta be the gun...
It's a great feeling when shooting a "new to you" gun and you shoot it well.
I had exactly the opposite experience 2 weeks ago.
I had purchased a Browning Superposed last fall and took it to my club on an open trap night and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it.
It was so bad I started to try to guess whether it was shooting low or high to try to dial it in. In the end nothing seemed to really help.
I'll probably send it on down the road if I can't figure what's what at the patterning board.

Phil;
We all know the J can do the job if held by the right shooter so give yourself a little pat on the back. Do you care to share your scores?
Roger;
Funny you should bring that up. I took a Browning that I used to shoot lights out 30+ years ago out for a little spin on the clays course and couldn't hit the ground with it. It's too nice a gun to ignore so I should move it down the road.

Owning a Fox is not a spectator sport.

Nothing to brag about really; just pretty good for my mediocre abilities. If I'm 20/25 or above I'm pretty happy, especially from the handicap line. No 25 straight yet, but a couple of 23's and nothing under 20.

More then a few years ago I had a Sterly 16 gauge restocked. New Case colors and I mean killer Turkish. By all accounts I should have shot that gun lights out. Took it to Hausmans and on the 5 stand course I broke 3 on the round. I couldn't hit a thing. Determined it might be a pitch issue and gave it to Matthew B to change the pitch. Well, he did change the pitch and send it back to me. Well, I had posted pics of it on another forum and someone on that forum fell in love with it and asked me what I would consider selling it and I gave him a price and he said ok and it was gone. So I shot it 25 times, hit 3 targets and moved it down the road.DarylC wrote: ↑Thu Apr 10, 2025 12:49 pm Phil;

I determined some months later that I had never owned or shot a straight grip other then a Skeet and Upland 16 gauge (which I shot well). More thinking and the Skeet and Upland I shot had a grip much thicker then my upgrade and also had the Savage late forearm which gave one plenty to hang on to. Anyway lesson learned. BTW, the guy I sold it to lives in Minn and shoots it lights out on both Grouse and Woodcock. Actually turned out great for him. I actually cut him a good deal as I sold it to him for what I had in it.
Attached is a pic.
