A New Year’s Day Grouse Hunt

Post by Foxnut »

Couldn’t hunt Monday or Tuesday so with the season closing today Rosey and I just had to take one more go at it. We had a light snow last night so I left about 9:00 a.m. and made the 90 minute drive North to Lake County, MI.

Snow was heavier up there and continued throughout our hunt. We hit three coverts that usually hold birds this time of year. We ended up only moving one grouse and that was a flush out of a white pine about 10 feet off the ground. I specifically was hunting conifer stands near older Aspen and transitional cover assuming the birds would be roosting in the pines due to weather and snow.

I had one more spot I was going to hunt but when we got there someone had beat us there so we headed home. It was great to stretch our legs and end the season. Only 9 1/2 months till the season opens again!!!

Time in the field with your dog and a gun is time well spent whether you come home empty handed or not.
