Dogs were not used for this type of hunting, A small boat for retrieval of dead birds was towed by the tender boat at least from accounts I have read. The gun may be a Lefever.

Craig, how about using a layout boat? It would be more comfortable than standing in cold water!

Jim;
Body Booting, like Craig and his crew did, is a traditional method of hunting the shallow water in the Susquehanna River's upper portion known as the "Flats". It evolved after sink boxes were outlawed. It can be great or miserable. Ask me how I know.

Owning a Fox is not a spectator sport.

Vegas was good except missed the East Coast fox boys. Lots of guns but not so many Foxes. Josh did have three nice XE’s. He had six tables of his stuff and another six for his auction guns. Lots of interest in the auction.

Sinkboxes were banned because they were too damned effective!! In the winter of 1917, Van Caroon, a "pickup man" for market hunter Van Griggs, shooting out of one in Back Bay VA, wrote the following: "The birds were falling faster than I could pick them up and tie them. You never saw Van's head come out of the box. I picked up 518 birds (mostly Canvasbacks) out of his first 600 shells (fired). He must have killed more than 700 birds." Kevin

Down in Currituck there is an outfit that hunts with curtain blinds. They are like sink boxes that are permanently attached to the bottom and have a flexible curtain that the gunner raises with the tide. My hats off to you guys who can body boot or hunt with curtains. If I was 20 years younger. Boats are as close to the Water as I get now.

I would try that in a skinny minute, Craig. Standing in nearly freezing water doesn't get my feet any colder than they get in a raised blind when the air temp is below freezing, anyway. I have suffered with my toes getting bitterly cold most of my adult life duck hunting. Toastie-Toes heat patches don't help me a bit. The rest of my feet don't get cold ........ just my toes. Lack of sufficient circulation I guess. I've considered the rechargeable heated insoles, but don't want to heat my whole foot. I'm afraid they would begin to sweat. What I dream of is a pair of socks with rechargeable heating elements in the toes only. I would pay serious $$$ for some if they worked well and would last.

For those that don't want to stand in freezing water, true sinkbox shooting is still legal in Canada (Quebec and Nova Scotia come to mind) for those that want to try it. I am up for it and want to try our Quebec outfitter that we used for 10 years for regular blind and marsh shooting. Got to get out AMONGST them! Kevin
