What is your favorite Sterlingworth??

Post by fox-admin »

I think every Fox collector/shooter should be required to own at least one Sterlingworth LOL!! What is your favored Sterlingwoth?? It could be a collector condition example or a favorite hunting gun. Mine is a run of the mill 12ga 30" circa 1923 M/F ejector gun. It's had a few stock issues but they have been properly repaired. Still closes like a bank vault and has about 50%CC and orginal barrel blue and stock finish. It could be my everyday gun but the higher grades are so addictive. I shoots it well and has accompanied me on many duck hunts on fowl weather days. How about you??

I have 3. My first Fox of any kind (well, all 3 Fox I own are SW) is a restocked/forensic with beaver tail 26" IC/M. Little CC but shoots well. Next is a 30" M/F that has nice case coloring and had the wood refinished very nicely. Decent stock dimensions. Last is a 30" F/F with terrible comb/stock dimensions. Both 30" are shown in the hunting with a fox. Latter has custom made cardboard comb to make it shootable complete with electrical tape adhesive.

The Sterlingworth I've shot the most is my 1937, 12-gauge, 28-inch barrel, Fox-Sterlingworth Ejector Skeet & Upland Game Gun. I shot quite a few doves on my dove pass in the Shenendoah Valley with a 12-gauge 30-inch "pin-gun" before I got my 32-inch A-Grade 16-gauge for those tall incoming doves. Most of the rest of my Sterlingworths are nice condition safe queen examples of variations.

FWIW a pretty nice first year 30-inch, 16-gauge, Sterlingworth showed up on GI today.

Hands down my SKUGG (Skeet & Upland Game Gun) 16 gauge straight grip 26" Sterly bored .004 / .011. In that configuration I declared them the finest designed and built grouse guns I have ever used. (This after 47 years in the grouse woods). Light, fast handling, and incredibly quick to get on a bird, I have used none better, including Browning Superposeds, Parkers, one LC Smith, and in my primordial SxS years a 20 ga. Fulton. Kevin

My favorite Sterly is “Iva”, my 1918 20 ga. with ejectors and 26” barrels. Great little gun! My 2nd choice is my 28”, 20 ga. I’ve killed a lot of pheasants with both guns and they are a pleasure to carry.

I feel inadequate. I do own 6 Fox Sterlingworth's: a 12 gauge Model 1911 Pin Gun 26" IC/Mod Brush model; 2 - 16's and 3 - 20's but I don't have the most common Fox - a simple 12 gauge Sterlingworth. I know, it could be easily remedied. Gotta work on that, I guess.

I do like shooting that 26 inch Brush Model Pin Gun tho.

Very interesting topic by the way.

I have a pile of them. A few were upgraded and a few remain the same. The one I shoot 95 percent of the time is an original 20 gauge 26" ejector Sterly that was restocked to fit me. Chokes are Fox Cylinder and light mod. After restocking I liked it so much I had it engraved as a second generation A grade. 5 lb 13 oz. Great to carry for Grouse and Woodcock.

I've owned a bunch of Sterlies and still have two, but my hands down favorite vixen is my second year (1913) 20 bore that's been restocked and converted to straight grip/long tang. Also, her chambers were lengthened for 2-3/4' shells and she's now choked Mod and I-Mod. frank

I have a bunch of upgrades and several untouched versions too, but I'll stick to almost original Sterlingworth's.

I have a pair, one 16, and one 20 that were restored by other folks that I was able to pick up over the years. One is a verified Turnbull color job, the other is a dead ringer, so who knows.

They make a great set for long weekend hunting trips as back-ups or even rainy day guns to save the high end stuff from abuse.

Getting these saved me from scratching the Savage/CSMC RBL clone itch when they came out a few years ago.

My first Fox (and first”good” shotgun), a Utica 16ga ejector. 28” barrels, 6-1/2 pounds, M/F, wood probably refinished at some point but a decent job, good blue and still some decent case colors. It’s been a good one and a better gun than I probably deserve.

Thanks Fred.

I've slowed down a bit and sold off a bunch of stuff.

Just trying to keep the stuff I use and shoot well.
