Becker choking?

Post by Silvers »

I'm wondering if anyone has a cerrosafe or similar cast of a genuine documented Becker long range choke and would like to share its dimensions with us or by personal PM? The description I've read in one of the reference books doesn't make sense, to me at least. It talks about transitioning from the bore diameter via a cone bored to a parallel configuration. Unless I'm reading something wrong that's a geometric impossibility..... cones don't have parallel sides. Thanks in advance for any help. Silvers

I'm willing to bet that no one who wrote about the Becker guns, with the exception of Tom Kidd, owned a bore micrometer at the time the pertinent article was written. Ever see an article on Beckers that cited bore diameter in thousandths?

Good morning Bill, my slight edit and your post crossed in cyberspace. No I've never read an in depth technical article on Becker boring and/or chokes. That's why I'd like to get a cast of a documented Becker gun with long range choke(s) and measure it myself with some precision equipment. Frank

This is the way I would interpret what the writer of the reference book was trying to convey: The Becker guns have a certain bore diameter (.736 or whatever it was), this bore diameter approx. 4" or so from the muzzle, then begins to taper down (.040-.050 or whatever it was), this creates a cone shaped section for perhaps about 3"or so, then this tapered area is followed by a parallel section of about an inch or so long at the muzzles...but maybe I'm all wrong.

Thanks for the interpretation but the same reference cites, in effect, that the transition from the bore diameter by means of a cone bored to a parallel configuration - is followed by a short straight section at the muzzle. The leading part of the Becker choke as it's described, i.e., cone bored to a parallel configuration, is what is hard to understand. Maybe it's just a book typo. Silvers

Frank...please bear with me, I don't think the writer was meaning the cone shaped area as having parallel walls, but rather the cone shaped area tapered down to a section of barrel length that does have parallel walls--the last little bit at the muzzles.

I would have to agree with Bamboozler. It seems perfectly clear to me. Perhaps you might want to read Askin's account of the experiments in "Modern Shotguns and Loads".

Greg and Don, thanks for your replies. Reading back over the reference I can understand how the sentence may be open to interpretation by those with differing backgrounds, i.e., classical or scientific education, etc. A plain english description would have been better, no need to interpret. Nevertheless I'd like to get some precise measuring done on a cast of an unmolested Becker long range choke. Still looking.

Here is a table showing how Becker choked one gun. It compares it to a late HE and an early BE. The HE was a 3" gun, the Becker a 2 3/4" and the BE a 2 5/8. Like Researcher I am not into counting patterns but I do know that all three guns throw even full patterns from both barrels. Thanks to short range for his help in gathering this info. This is not e

I am sorry for the format. If you would like the information in a better form I would be happy to send it in excel if you send me a pm with your email.

This Becker has the cone end at the muzzel. There is not a parallel section.

Are there some Becker guns that we have not seen pictures of? Thanks for posting Becker pictures and particulars.

I have measured 35+ Super Fox chokes and never found any to have a parallel section. Matter of fact I have never found any Fox to have a parallel section. LC Smith's do have a 1" parallel section, at least the one's I own. Craig
