Pattern testing my SF with Boss,TM and Salt Creek ammo.
Re: Pattern testing my SF with Boss,TM and Salt Creek ammo.
Jeff, thanks for the continued study on this topic. And the detailed pictures, it sure makes it easier to understand the dynamics of this with good photos. Although i no longer own a SF (sold it back to original owner in a weak moment) I do have several other tight choked guns that I am sure could be patterned to add additional info to this thread. Looking forward to an unofficial ammo test next year at Ernie's. Maybe you can bring your fancy electronic patterning tester?

Re: Pattern testing my SF with Boss,TM and Salt Creek ammo.
Friends and colleagues…. One last comment regarding my experience with Boss ammo. As mentioned above, Craig shipped me 2 rounds of Boss 2 3/4”, 1 1/4 oz #5 copper plated duck loads (with fiber wads). Considering the price of ammo, and the hassles of shipping, this was very generous. Thanks Craig.
Yesterday, I took two shots using my Super Fox, right barrel choked at .048”. I was excited to give these shells a try because they worked pretty good in Craig’s gun. Unfortunately, they did not work for me. First, I did not empty a shell to count pellets. The Boss website says 238 pellets. Craig counted 199, so I used Craig’s count.
My first shot put 36% in a 30” circle at 40 yards. My second shot put 56% in the 30” circle at 40 yards.
As some of you know, I use a patterning software stored in my phone. One of it’s features is that it “corrects” or “determines” the center of impact and then creates the 30” circle. I like this feature because compensates if my aim is off dead center. Some of you may disagree. Okay, so after I used the software to analyze the pattern, I simply drew a 30” circle and counted the pellet holes. Using the “traditional” method I had patterns of 36% and 40% respectively. Incidentally, I did NOT find any fragments in my hardboard back stop as I did last time. Once again, thanks Craig, and I look forward to further discussions while at Hausmann’s. Jeff

Re: Pattern testing my SF with Boss,TM and Salt Creek ammo.
Great work Jeff. Gold star for you! Your report just underscores - to me at least - that Bismuth and other non-tox alloy pellets act differently as regards fluid dynamics in Special Long Range vintage shotguns designed and regulated for lead shot. Some who weren't into the sciences while in school may wonder about my use of the term "fluid" and thus I'll add that shot traveling at high velocity through a cylinder (shotgun bore) and choke (gradual or rapid constriction as in a nozzle) will behave as a fluid and exit same depending on its shape and properties.
Bottom line is that those tempted to pop a cap or two at the lone quacker that cruises by in the clouds after boring hours in the blind, are well served to do some paper patterning and penetration testing at increasing ranges, to see what your Super-Fox, LCS Long Range, Ithaca Super 10 or Parker 3-incher will really do with those XYZ brand shells. frank

Falling into the FWIW, category in regards to velocity and patterning of same, I at one time bought every turkey load I could find (Pre TSS) and found that lower velocity shells seems to always pattern best. Even know with the TSS, the slower shells seem to pattern better.

Thanks Jeff: Crazy such a difference in two very similar barrels. If I had "corrected" my patterns for center with your software I it would have improved my percentages. My SF had very few flyers, they were just outside the 30" circle.

Yes Craig, apparently my gun is a little finicky.

“Target Telemetrics”. I’ll be having dinner with one of the creators in about an hour.

Food for thought from this day one Life Member: with the highly touted achievement of 500+ AHFCA members and with many more "users" in the wings, how is it that less than a dozen gents commented/replied or even acknowledged this interesting tech thread by doing the thumbs up emoji? Especially so with those who are proud to own a Super or are looking for one. Where are readers going to find tech info like this somewhere else?
It seems to me that most are here on the site to be entertained. Well I suppose that's a reason for joining up but let's be mindful that the handful of entertainers keeps dwindling and we so rarely see info posted by anyone else. Something to think about. frank

Re: Pattern testing my SF with Boss,TM and Salt Creek ammo.
I wish I knew the answer and have given it much thought for many years. Are members afraid of negative responses? Do members feel no one will be interested in what they have to say or what? From my conversations with the LC Smith and Lefever BOD's they suffer the same lack of an active dialog on their forums. I enjoy sharing my limited knowledge and experiences with all, it is rewarding and I do it for my own satisfaction. I look forward to visiting the forum and I am interested in what others are doing from hunting adventures to Fox gun collecting. I really wish it would change but without more members making an effort it is unlikely. I'm open to any suggestions, let's hear some.Silvers wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 7:36 am Food for thought from this day one Life Member: with the highly touted achievement of 500+ AHFCA members and with many more "users" in the wings, how is it that less than a dozen gents commented/replied or even acknowledged this interesting tech thread by doing the thumbs up emoji? Craig,i also look forward to new post each morning . i do think fear of being criticized is one issue that prevents some members from posting. do not have any suggestions to overcome that issue other than my opinion the vast majority of members are good guys and would overlook any honest misstatement or unintentional faux pas. in regard to fewer post perhaps pulling old post from the archives would generate renewed interest and banter .there is a treasure trove of great post such as bill gs trap gun collection that when bumped after nine year pause turned into pleasant thread with new info being shared. thanks for keeping this site up and running, regards fred

https://i.ibb.co/g628YwR/bismuth-test.jpg Some time ago I patterned some Boss 3 in #4 with plastic wadd, in my Fox Wildfowl and Winchester 21 duck gun. I aimed at center of target like a rifle and both Guns threw patterns high at 40 yds. pellets penetrated the plywood with no signs of fragmenting that I could see. I have shot Ducks and Geese. pattern your gun with the load your going to hunt with.
