A Few Questions

Post by Jbtsteed »

Hello Friends and Folks. As I have been reading this forum for a short bit now, it is definitely a pleasure being here amongst the esteemed and knowledgeable individuals who are members here.

With that said, I will try to be quick, to the point, and as concise as possible. (Please, do not hesitate to inform me if I am breaking any forum rules or general forum etiquette with any of my questions)

A few years ago, a friend was bequeathed a shotgun that happens to be an A.H. Fox. She has a few questions that I attempted to help her with. However, my knowledge is limited to more modern types.

Basically, she just wants an aggregate of information pertaining to this particular shotgun. Apologies for the lack of pictures at the moment. I can provide more if needed. (Could possibly take a day or so)

Sincrely & Thank You,

J.B.

We would all enjoy looking at more pictures. To me it looks like a first generation “C” grade, which means it was shipped prior to 1913. Pictures of the stock, barrels and forearm would be nice. We can’t tell if it has “ejectors” from these two pictures. Jeff

It is a 12-gauge C-Grade, or CE-Grade if it has automatic ejectors, of 1910 vintage. It has been refinished and exhibits my pet peeve of not having the engraving picked up before the bluing and color case hardening was done.

It might be a picture illusion but it looks like the barrels are "off the face" which means the back ends of the barrels don't contact the breech faces when closed. Expand the second pic and it looks like quite a gap between the two surfaces. Not good if that's not an illusion; that can happen when the gun frame warps when quenched after re-color casing and the "gunsmith" tries to compensate. Also, there are other causes for that condition. frank

ADDED on December 7 - looking at your pic again it seems like the colors lack the depth of real case hardening and possibly are heat colors created with an oxy/fuel torch. Nevertheless as noted the barrels appear to be off the face which can be a relatively expensive fix and only done properly by a very few competent Foxsmiths. More pics of the entire gun would be required to come up with an approximate value if that's what your friend is looking for.
