Grouse out, now for Pheasants

Post by Silvers »

Our PA grouse season ended yesterday and tho it started out well for me, the last few weeks have been very tough. What birds? Besides plenty of exercise I ended with four grouse taken up in the mountains in old haunts and some new search covers and one bagged nearby my home while out for woodcock. Total of 5 which sounds pretty low but from what I hear from dedicated PA grouse hunting friends that's pretty good for this year.

Finished for grouse yesterday morning and then swung to pheasants. I've been hunting this year with a variety of guns to include Fox, Parker, Lefever and Remington SxS's in 12-16-20. Yesterday was 20 bore day and here's a quick pic with two nice ringnecks and a Parker VH along with my straight grip Fox. Our daily limit is two birds; they were taken with Super-X 6's.

Adeste fideles. Merry Christmas everyone! frank

Very nice Frank. Have a buddy who treks up to some PA SGL's every season with his setters and also a Springer for Pheasants and Woodcock. No Grouse there at all (South Central Pa) but he does well on the others. He thinks Pa runs a good Pheasant program and the birds act like birds should act.

Great picture Frank. I’m always impressed with your attention to detail when setting up a picture. The birds and guns look great. By the way…… nice wood on the Fox.

Nice going Frank. I try to other guns too but I usually regret not using a Fox.

5 grouse is doing good in Pa. I only managed 3 for the year, due to poor shooting. I usually average around 10.

Nice report, Frank. Thanks. Sure hoped you'd be able to pose a grouse or two at the the 'bubble-up" for pics. Maybe next season.

Nice guns!

Frank, Five grouse in PA is a major accomplishment these days. Even with a good dog and young legs. I'm sure you worked hard for them.
I ended up with only two. I didn't get to shoot enough to know if I was shooting poorly or not.
Have fun with the pheasant.

Great pic Frank! I’ve heard PA does a good job with their pheasant program. Hopefully MI can learn from them. Our pheasant numbers are nowhere near what they used to be.

Thanks everyone. Here's another daily limit of cock birds taken with vintage paper shells in my Sterlingworth 20 Straight Grip and Parker VHE 16 on the #1 frame. Peters and Remington shells respectively. :) frank
