cocking slide spring

I received the spring yesterday and today I took the Fox apart. I removed the trigger guard and set the spring into the hole. My question is, is the spring correct to sit above the hole and then pushed down by the trigger guard screw...if so I can't do it, I thought about cutting the spring so that it just comes up to the top of the action, but!!! is that right to do. The invoice says ( cocking slide spring, used factory original ) are there different lengths for different gages. Mine is a 16 sterlingworth and the spring sits about 1/4 inch above the top plate, there is no way that I can push it down enough to engage the threads on the trigger guard.. any help or suggestions ????

The cocking slide is in the barrel lug and trigger guard and screw have nothing to do with cocking slide. Are you talking about top lever trip spring? Bobby

There is NO spring that sets against the threaded stud on the front part of the trigger guard that screws in the trigger plate.

There IS a small coil spring that's between the trip pin and the screw on the trigger plate - just forward of where the trigger guard screws into the trigger plate.

And as bbman3 says, the cocking slide sits on the barrel lug. The cocking slide spring is behind the screw on the rear side of the barrel lug. Picture of the cocking slide below on top of the barrel lug.

Thanks guys, I need all the help I can get. The last time to took it apart I was in my late 60's or early 70.s I turned 80 this year and things that I could do are out of reach for me now. Once you guys said where it was it all came back and I installed the spring in the right place and it works great. again, thank you.

Thank you Stan, it gets a lot harder when your legs give out on you but I think I fixed it, got a golf cart, 6 inch lift, big tires with a lot of traction, put a set of head lights on it and friends here in the canyon have a small trailer that they don't use and they gave it to me. We will see how that goes.
