Purely for educational purposes....

Post by Jeff S »

Purely for educational purposes.... could someone look at a shotgun listed on "GI"? There is a listing for a FOX AE with a two barrel set consisting of a 16 ga. and a 20 ga. barrel. One of the pictures shows the muzzle end of the barrels. On the set of barrels on the left, the barrels come very close to touching. On the set of barrels on the right, the barrels are not close to touching. Does that mean they were "cut"? In the description, both sets retain some "choke" so I'm guessing that they came from the factory with "tight" chokes. Then, 2" was cut off and they still have some choke. Does anyone have an opinion? Sincerely, Jeff

Jeff, despite commonly held legend and just commenting for education, tubes touching at the muzzle is not a definitive test of barrel length originality on a Fox.

For more info on the educational subject refer to Tom Kidd's excellent article An Expatriate Returns in Volume 6/Issue 4 of the DGJ.

Yep Jeff, cold foggy mornings and warmish afternoons hereabouts and Jack Frost is starting to paint slowly. My time of year is almost here. :)

Suggestion... when referring to guns for sale on GI or GB, please post the listing numbers so that they can easily be found.

Rules governing our open forums forbid links to guns for sale to protect our 501C3 status. Such links are allowable in the Members Only forums.

Dave, thanks for clarifying the distinction between the two portions of our forum. When I started this thread, I specifically avoided the link because I had been politely "coached" a few years ago. I couldn't remember all of the details, I just knew not to do it. Now I'll remember that it's allowable in the members section. And once again, thanks to everyone for their input. Once you think you have these old guns figured out, you learn that nothing is concrete. (Like my straight grip A grade the shipped from the factory with a short tang). :)

Well, I can't find it anymore. However, you'll notice that Mr. "Classicioi" said it was his gun, so you could send a "PM" to him. Jeff

Gee, I'm a little sorry I brought up the the topic now. You said that you had them checked by the guys at Briley and they said that they were "okay". Those guys know a lot more about gun barrels than I'll ever know. Once again, my sincere apology and good luck with your very nice gun.
