Adding an inch to a butt stock question

Post by John Joseph »

The next step in making my circa 1915 Sterlingworth a shooter will be lengthening an already shortened butt stock.
With the Pachmayer white line pad that's on it, I'll need at least a full additional inch.
Any tips on how to do this so it will look esthetically pleasing?
I'm thinking maybe a leather lace up to cover the additional spacers.

Here's a Fox with a > 1" extension that was glued and screwed into place, then sanded and with faux mineral streaking to match up with the buttstock. Afterwards it was spot refinished/blended into the original varnish. This Fox had been owned by a somewhat noted gent and I wanted to retain its original stock which had been cut. The spacer is a scrap piece of thinshell walnut. Just shows what can be done.

Frank, FintoFeather,
Both are great examples of what can be done. Some great wood craftsmanship!

Mark Larson charges a pretty penny for his work, but it is appreciated by those who choose to use his services.

Have you added up all the services he requires to complete the job from scratch? What total did you come up with?

Bill, according to his website (rates charged), he will add an extension and blend it in with grain enhancement on both the buttstock and forend, to match, for $750.

Just a short comment here and I'll be quiet. Over the past few years I've looked at a high grade Syracuse Lefever that's on display and For Sale ongoing at one of the larger SxS events. The stock has an extension, attributed to a gent who's recognized for that type work, and while the wood grain matching is excellent the transition area looks odd and it's obvious when you handle the gun that a spacer had been added, and it detracts greatly imo. I don't know when the spacer work had been done and maybe it's an age thing. The Lefever doesn't look like it was hunted since that work.

Net, when getting a spacer added "your mileage may vary".

Good comment, Frank. In my opinion, a perfect Mark Larson job is meant to be invisible at the time of the gun's resale, at least in some cases. I don't know whether that's good or bad.
