26 in brush gun
Have a chance to acquire a Sterlingworth with 26in barrels from a friend. Serial # 1600xx . Guess about 1938-39 gun. The gun appears to be in ex condition. Bright barrels, lever to the right. The stock and fore end in excellent shape. How rare are the 26 inch barrels? Does $500. sounds like a good price?

26" barrels are not that uncommon.
The only way to know if the barrels are original is to order a factory letter from Savage. The AHFCA does not have records of Sterlingworths, only graded guns.

Re: 26 in brush gun
FWIW in my nearly thirty years of recording observed Sterlingworths, all the guns I've recorded in the 160xxx and 161xxx serial number range have 26-inch barrels except for one two-barrel set which also has a set of 28-inch barrels. Does the gun have a straight grip or a pistol grip?

26" barrels are not rare at all. Price not bad from your description. If the barrels have chokes left in them that fit your needs and you like what you see, I would not spend $45.00 for a factory letter to find out barrel length.

If the gun has an original straight grip, you have a Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun:

If the gun has an original pistol grip, you have a Sterlingworth Brush:

If it has any case color left on the receiver and in the condition you state $500 is a steal.....
